It’s the state’s largest mental health care provider for youth and their families. Last year, the organization served nearly 15,000 people with services like psychiatric residential treatment, outpatient services, in-home skills training, among others. When Oregon moved from a children’s mental health system that relied on residential care to one that emphasizes providing services for children at home or in their communities, Trillium shifted its focus, putting youth and their families at the center of their own treatment. Stone said one of the goals of Keep Oregon Well was to understand and interrupt systemic dysfunctions that either caused or exacerbated trauma for the students and their families.

Oregon ranks worst for “prevalence of mental illness,” according to the report. The ranking is based on self-reported rates of mental illness, substance abuse, and suicidal thoughts. In Oregon, 27% of adults report suffering from mental illness -- 6 percentage points higher than the national average, according to a recent report by Mental Health America, a Virginia-based nonprofit that annually tracks the prevalence of mental illness and access to care in every state.
